Wear Behavior of Nb Alloyed Gray Cast Iron for Automotive Brake Disc Application

Gray cast iron (GCI) with a pearlitic matrix and type-A graphite remains the most widely used material in manufacturing of brake discs. To reduce environmental impact disc wear during braking, alternative materials and/or compositions to standard ones are being studied. In this study, effect variation niobium content (0–0.7 wt%) on microstructure behavior samples machined from discs made hypoeutectic gray was investigated. The GCI examined through pin-on-disc (PoD) tests using low-metallic-friction as counterparts. Microstructural analyses hardness measurements were also conducted evaluate Nb addition morphology graphite, eutectic cells, distribution carbides. addition, mechanisms different evaluated scanning electron microscope analysis. results revealed that adding 0.3% promotes highest resistance alloys.
